CCSO News April - Our First 100 Days

Time flies when you're..... well honestly it just flies.  Hard to believe I took office three months ago. I have learned a lot and will continue to do so. I have had the pleasure of promoting some very amazing people and welcoming some new members to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office. I continue to focus on hiring the right people for the job and making sure we hold on to those who have already proven their value to the agency and the community.

During the initial months we have looked at many ways to address safety concerns, as well as researching best practices. Two things have recently gone into effect. First, virtual video visitations are live. Inmates and their families are able to have video visits either pre-scheduled or during specific hours of the day (See website for details and times accgov.com/sheriff ). Secondly, inmates and families now have access to email services. It took time to develop the infrastructure to provide consistent and secure access to this service, but it is now available. It is crucial that loved ones are able to have contact with their family members, especially with the added stress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. I understand that nothing takes the place of a warm hug from mom or dad, but these options are the biggest steps in that direction we can make at this point.

I have alluded to our new Community Outreach Unit, and I can now officially say that the unit is up and operational, located in the Sheriff’s Training Complex.  They have begun participating and coordinating events in the community, reaching out in recruiting efforts, and training for a wide spectrum of responsibilities. We recently enjoyed a wonderful time in the community by introducing our Hop with a Cop event. We visited several areas in Athens – Target, Wal-Mart and the Georgia Square Mall, as well as a few surprise appearances at residential locations. I enjoyed literally hopping and sharing hugs and treats with hundreds of children.

Lastly, I want to let you all know that I am about to deliver on my promise to make the Sheriff's Office more fiscally responsible and efficient. I began working with ACC Human Resources my first week in office to create a position responsible for reviewing and negotiating contracts, supporting all areas of the agency, and seeking out grants. Our new Planning Administrator started in April! (see separate article)
